Business as Usual

( London ) –  2021

"Business as Usual" portrays the appearance of central London during the pandemic. The photographs were taken in some of the city's most important commercial areas during the periods between lockdowns. These were places without neighbours and devoid of tourists, only visited by those who had a reason to be there at the time.

Driven by the fast pace of capitalism, which blurs the lines between leisure, work, and consumption, the center was mainly frequented by those who did not have the option to work from home. If social distancing had brought about any changes, they were not immediately visible in central London.
People of different origins and social backgrounds could be seen walking along the large shopping avenues, ironically maintaining the same social distancing that urban dynamics have always established.

If public space is defined by the practices and encounters it houses and receives from its participants, then we could argue that what governments referred to as the "new normal" was simply the reestablishment of a space hostile to unexpected uses, restricted to pure productivity.
